Alexis Jean Fournier Murals

A corner of the Main Salon of the Roycroft Inn adorned by the murals of Alexis Jean Fournier. Guests can relax in the tranquility of this room.

Adorning the Main Salon and New Foyer of The Inn are the original murals painted by Alexis Jean Fournier, a Barbizon-style artist, whose career as the “Roycroft Court Painter” spanned over forty-five years. Fournier has been lauded as one of the most prolific artists of the Arts and Crafts period as well as an influential force in Elbert Hubbard’s Roycroft community in East Aurora, New York.

These murals are the largest group of murals ever painted by Fournier. Originally there were 20 paintings of which 16 remain today. The original 20 murals represented three themes and were separated in three rooms. Paintings depicting seasons of the year were located in the original foyer. The times of the day paintings were located in the former music room which is now the “new foyer.” And the main salon contained twelve paintings of the important cities and sites of the world.

In 1992, the original remaining 16 paintings were removed from The Inn and underwent a seven month conservation treatment by a team of art conservationists directed by James Hamm, Associate Professor of Paintings Conservation at Buffalo State College. The paintings were re-installed in August of 1996 after The Inn had completed its restoration.

Today, guests may enjoy the paintings as they enter the “new foyer” and see the four paintings of the times of the day from morning to night. In the Main Salon, there are 12 paintings depicting famous cities, temples and sites of the world including East Aurora. The Inn is pleased to share these beautiful and significant pieces of artwork with its visitors and guests.
